Living Room Lighting

A good illumination in your living room is harmonic and functional

Reading a good book, drinking a glass of wine or a cup of tea or watching a good movie – those are the times where you can leave your cares behind you. The living room is the most important room in your residence. It's interior furnishing signifies your individual lifestyle. The illumination concept should be as sophisticated as the furnishing. Only one lighting fixture cannot be up to the many daily situations. Apart from serving a functional purpose, lighting also impacts on the atmosphere of a room.

The Fördergemeinschaft Gutes Licht (a light adviser for correct lighting – a collective expertise of some 125 member companies) recommends at least three light sources, which have the following functions: 1. General lighting 2. Lighting for strenuous visual tasks, such as reading, writing or handiwork - direct lighting is always the better choice. 3. Accent lighting. The bigger the room the different the use the more fixtures have to be installed. Especially elderly people need more light, because their vision decreases. A sixty year old with a normal vision needs more than twice the luminance to have the same effect of lightness than a child.

Full of atmosphere and cosiness

General lighting provides an overview and permits orientation. There are a number of lamps, which are suitable for this task: surface-mounted ceiling luminaries, spots, crystal chandeliers, wire and rod systems or power tracks. The design is a matter of taste. All luminaries should be dimmer-controlled so that the lighting level can be adjusted to suit the mood of the occasion.

A particularly harmonious atmosphere is generated by indirect lighting. Indirect light reflected into the room by walls and ceiling is found visually agreeable. Up lights are well suited to this task. But indirect lighting alone can also result in poor modeling and a monotonous atmosphere. Spot lights can avoid that. Accent lighting, for example pictures or display cabinets, provide visual relief. The right light color for lamps is warm white. The incandescent, fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps are mainly an option for general lighting. Mains-voltage tungsten halogen lamps and particularly low-voltage tungsten halogen lamps are also recommended for accent lighting.

Light for reading and watching TV

Writing, reading or handiwork – rooms in the home which are used for a variety of activities require more than just general lighting. The types of luminaries depend on of the activity and the visual task performed. The harder the visual task, the higher the lighting level needs to be. For reading swivel-mounted luminaries which can be dimmed to meet individual requirements are the solution of choice for reading lighting. Reading lights should have a wide beam spread. For example: floor lamps, reading lamps or up lights. For long periods of reading, balanced, finely tuned lighting is needed. To prevent premature fatigue, it must be neither monotonously bright nor too low.

For watching TV, all luminaries should be positioned so that no reflections are cast onto the television screen. Luminaries near the screen should be dimmed or switched off. For illuminating nearby wall areas, one option is to mount wall luminaries behind the television. But these should not be the only source of lighting; supplementary luminaries should be provided in the room, because marked differences in brightness between screen and surroundings place excessive strain on our eyes.

The right table lighting

For the best dining table lighting, the lamps should be selected to suit the size and design of the tables. The ideal dining table lamp is a pendant, which hangs around 60 centimeters above the table. It illuminates the table top and the surrounding area without causing glare and the focal point to the person towards you is not restricted. For a comfortable illumination of the surrounding area general lighting is recommended.
