... about the designer ...

Nigel Coates

Coates is one of the few British architects who is equally well known as a designer. Also uniquely, he has consistently asserted that architecture and design should reflect the confusion and sensuality of the city at large. His first successful arena was Japan, where, during the late 80s and 90s, he built over twenty buildings and interiors. With his characteristic wit and cultural complexity, his work reflected the bizarre exchange of cultures so eagerly sought after there. Later he and his practice built many shops, restaurants and museums in Britain and Europe, including the National Centre for Popular Music and the Geffrye Museum both in the UK. They were chosen to represent Britain at the 7th Biennale of Architecture 2000. Typically, his furniture and glass designs, such as those for Hitch Mylius and Salviati, play with association and context, and roll their references into fluid, sensual forms. Throughout his career, Coates has pursued his ideas through exhibitions and publications amongst which his book, Guide to Ecstacity, is the most ambitious. He is also Professor of Architectural Design at the Royal College of Art, London.
