Illumination concepts for kitchen lighting
The kitchen used to be the centre of the house and is still a place of sociableness and communication. Cooking, eating and celebrating – the kitchen reflects life style and is at the same time a challenging workplace, which needs to provide adequate light. Handling hot pots and using sharp knifes can easily become an adventure - good lighting helps avoid injuries. The chef should not stand in its own shadow. The light should possibly beam from a steeply angle to the work surface.
General kitchen lighting
First and foremost, the kitchen is a working place and therefore a good general lighting is required. The general lighting also needs to provide adequate light for looking in cupboards, drawers and shelving units. Only one lighting fixture in the middle of the room is not able to provide enough light for these tasks. At least two fixtures are needed – dinning table and the work surface should be illuminated separately.
Workplace lighting
Cutting, peeling, chopping, cooking - working in the kitchen has its hazards and can be dangerous – good lighting helps to avoid injuries. Ideal for worktops is direct lighting which does not cause glare or cast shadows. Over the cooker, glare-free luminaries are recommended. In most cases, these are normally integrated in the cooker hood. For cookers without a hood light, wall sconces can be used.
Dinning table lighting
Dining table or kitchen bar lighting should be designed to suit the size and shape of the dining surface. Suspension lamps are recommended for kitchen bars – these should be positioned just above eye level, with their lower edge around 60 centimetres above the dining surface. This is to avoid glare without blocking direct eye contact with the person sitting in front of you. For kitchen tables which are not only used as dining tables and where light is needed from different heights, pendants designed for variable height adjustments are the right choice.
